Hey, I’m Nicholas Shute — cybersecurity professional, veteran, and hands-on learner who believes the best way to understand a system is to take it apart (ethically, of course).

I hold a Master’s in Cybersecurity from Rowan University and a Security+ certification, with training in threat intelligence, forensics, and workplace security. I recently wrapped up a Cybersecurity Internship at South Jersey Industries, where I gained practical, real-world experience across several core areas of the field such as incident response, vulnerability assessments, compliance, user training, and vendor coordination — building a strong foundation in both technical skills and cross-functional communication.

Before transitioning into cybersecurity, I worked as a Security Specialist at Target, where I supported threat detection and incident response using RFID and internal monitoring tools. That role sharpened my attention to detail, threat analysis, and decision-making under pressure. I also served as a Field Artillery Cannon Crewmember in the U.S. Army, where I learned discipline, adaptability, and how to operate critical systems in high-stress environments (and keeping calm when things literally explode) — traits I now bring to every cybersecurity challenge (but not the exploding part… I hope).

Outside of my work life, I’ve built a full-scale home lab with virtual machines across Windows, Linux, and macOS, completed 20+ hands-on labs on TryHackMe, and started a YouTube channel — Cyb3r Nick — where I share walkthroughs and tutorials for others breaking into the field. I also like building things from scratch, whether it’s a smart mirror that displays real-time data or a website to sell homemade products such as engraved woodwork, 3D-prints, and personalized items. In my downtime, I compete in spartan races, tough mudders, and jump out of planes for fun! (yes, I understand it’s not normal). I’m also an avid gamer and reader that loves to disconnect from reality and immerse myself in entirely different worlds. On the other hand, I love traveling OUR world, hoping one day to make it to Italy.

At the end of the day, I’m someone who is driven by the challenge of staying one step ahead in a constantly evolving world. For me, cybersecurity is part puzzle, part discipline, and part creativity — a field where continuous learning isn’t just a bonus, it’s a requirement. Whether I’m writing scripts, tracing indicators of compromise, or helping others learn the ropes, I’m motivated by impact: protecting systems, enabling teams, and always pushing to grow both technically and personally.
